Frequently Asked Questions About Terminology
Do I need Package 1 if I already have a terminology list?
Not necessarily. Package 1 is especially useful when your existing terminology is no longer practical to use, has become unnecessarily large, contains numerous duplicates or inconsistent terms or is difficult to navigate reliably. In this case, we select the relevant terms, remove problematic entries and create a reliable basis for the next steps.
What is the difference between a translation memory (TM) and a terminology list (TL)?
A translation memory (TM) contains previously translated sentences or text segments and makes it possible to reuse them in future translations.
A terminology list (TL), on the other hand, contains individual technical terms. It includes definitions, approved and non-recommended variants, the relevant approval status and other important information.
While a TM makes it easier to reuse existing translations, a TL ensures the consistent use of technical terms across all documents and languages.
Who decides which term is preferred?
Tetras coordinates the process, identifies inconsistencies, develops recommendations and advises you on language and terminology questions. However, the final decision is made together with you, especially for terms that involve safety-related aspects, legal responsibilities or internal technical standards.
Which formats will I receive the prepared terminology in?
We tailor the output to the tools and workflows you use. For example, we can provide your terminology data as an Excel, CSV or TBX file, or in another structured format suitable for import into CAT tools or editing systems such as SCHEMA ST4.
The specific format is aligned with your existing technology environment and with how you intend to use the terminology going forward.
How is the service connected to the Termserver?
The term server is used to centrally manage and archive approved terminology. Customers have 24/7 access and can use, review or update the terminology at any time.
Why should terminology be standardized before manuals are digitalized?
As manuals become digital, modular or fully structured, their content is used across a growing number of systems and channels. The same text may appear in instructions, service applications, customer portals, configurators or internal knowledge bases.
During digitization, inconsistent terminology is easily replicated across all these outputs. Reviewed and approved terminology therefore greatly simplifies content migration and reuse, translation automation and the future use of intelligent search functions or AI-powered assistants.
How is the price determined?
The price depends primarily on the scope and quality of the source data, the number of subject areas, the required level of processing, the number of languages and the extent of collaboration with technical reviewers.
